Kitakyushu is an "International Technology City" blessed with the sea and greenery that grew up at the contact point of Kyushu Island, the southern end of the Japanese archipelago, and Honshu Island. It, in addition to being an important relay point for the trade of the two islands from ancient times, was also an important place that commands an important international strait (Kanmon Strait) through which sea routes from the continent of China and the Korean peninsula pass. After entering the twentieth century it developed as an important industrial region in Japan and came to embrace more than one million people.
